Invitation: Eleventh Hans Kelsen Memorial Lecture with Dr. Erin Pobjie

The Institute cordially invites you to the annual Hans Kelsen Memorial Lecture on Peace and Security Law. This year, Dr. Erin Pobjie, Senior Fellow for Space at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, expert in space security and international law, and an alumna of the Institute, will speak on the topic of "International Law at the Final Frontier: Global Space Governance and the Prevention of an Arms Race in Outer Space."

Lecture start: International Law of Peace and Security

In the winter semester of 2026/2027, Professor Kreß will be teaching the course International Law of Peace and Security. The course will examine the international legal prohibition of the threat and use of force, along with its exceptions, in the context of the current volatile political climate. The connections to general questions of international law will also be considered throughout. Information on registration and course content can be found here.

Lecture start: Criminal Law I

In the winter semester 2026/2027, Prof. Kreß will be giving the lecture course Criminal Law I. The lecture covers the legitimacy of criminal law and its basic concepts, the general prerequisites for criminal liability, as well as the general manifestations of criminal offenses. Filmvorführung mit anschließender Diskussion: ‚The Veto' – mit Jennifer Trahan (Clinical Professor am Center for Global Affairs, NYU)

Als zentrales Organ der Vereinten Nationen für die Wahrung des Weltfriedens und der internationalen Sicherheit entworfen, hat sich der UN-Sicherheitsrat innerhalb kürzester Zeit zu einer Institution entwickelt, die paradigmatisch für die Herausforderungen der internationalen Zusammenarbeit in Sicherheitsfragen steht. Die wiederholte und oft kritisierte Blockade von Resolutionsentwürfen durch eine oder mehrere der fünf Vetomächte hat in einer Vielzahl von Konfliktkontexten zur Lähmung dieses zentralen UN-Organs geführt – mit gravierenden Folgen für das internationale Vertrauen in die friedenssichernde Fähigkeit des UN-Systems.
